摘要:

Nonlinear acoustics play an important role in material characterization and damage evaluation. However, it is very challenging to accurately measure the nonlinear acoustic parameters. Current experimental methods typically require high energy ultrasonic wave excitation and/or complicated calibration of instruments, and many nonlinear acoustic techniques are still limited in laboratory research.

In this presentation, Dr. Zhu will present thermal effects on nonlinear acoustic measurements. Temperature variation is typically treated as an undesired effect in experiments to be controlled or eliminated.  We proposed to use temperature change as the driving force to excite nonlinear behaviors of materials and measure the thermally induced nonlinear acoustic responses for material evaluation. The proposed method is naturally immune from the thermal effect. The simple experimental setup of the thermal modulation test enables applications of the nonlinear acoustic technique to large-scale structures and evaluation of microcracking damage in various types of materials.

For experiments that are highly sensitive to temperature variations, the thermal effect cannot be neglected.  Dr. Zhu will also present our most recent findings for self-temperature correction.
